FAQ

What is the lymphatic system and what does it do?

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and tissues that help remove excess fluid and waste products from the body. It also plays a key role in the immune system by transporting white blood cells to fight infection and disease.

Who would benefit from lymphatic drainage?

Most commonly recommended by surgeons for pre and post-operative care, however, manual lymphatic drainage can benefit anyone - whether you suffer from chronic pain, low immune system, difficulty breathing, OR you simply want to improve the overall health of your body. Our certified lymphatic drainage therapists will help you to reduce fluid build-up, improve circulation, and stimulate your immune system, so that you can feel your best and live life to the fullest.

How is lymphatic drainage performed?

Lymphatic drainage is performed by a trained therapist using a gentle, rhythmic motion on the skin to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid towards the lymph nodes.

How often should I get lymphatic drainage?

The frequency of lymphatic drainage can vary depending on your individual needs and condition.  Typically recommended in a series of 5-10 sessions. Consult with both your physicians and your therapist to determine the optimal frequency for your situation.

Lymphatic Drainage may be contraindicated if: (consult with your physicians)

  • You are running a fever.

  • Have cardiovascular or kidney disorders.

  • Active or recent cancer.

How should I prepare for my session?

Eat light, healthy meals and drink plenty of water for a few days before and after your session.

What should I wear for my session?

Dress comfortably. You will disrobe and lay face up under sheets and be covered appropriately at all times. Your comfort and modesty will not be compromised. No lotions or oils are used, so no need to worry about any unwanted residue.

What should I expect from a MLD session?

While this is not a massage, the movements are very gentle and rhythmic, so it is still very relaxing.  The movements are very orderly to properly stimulate and drain the system, much like sweeping before you mop.  Your therapist will work mostly on the front side of your body, only working on the posterior when it is necessary for certain session goals.

Will I be sick after my session?

While rare, it is possible.  If your system is highly toxic or if you are fighting off pathogens you may feel ill after your session.  Do not be alarmed and try to avoid treating the symptoms with fever reducers as this healing crisis is your body's natural and necessary response to kill these pathogens. Be patient and let your immune system do its job.  It should pass within a few hours.
